There are a few signs scattered around the east side of Athens-Clarke County, Georgia (USA) today that continue the legendary tradition of the University of Georgia's notorious Iron Horse.
Can the Iron Horse reveal the great mysteries of the universe? And for that matter, who has put up the signs for drivers to ponder as they drift by? Who has used the charmingly Southern-style phonetic spelling of iron ("Iorn")? And is this spelling, perhaps, a code?
While the signs might be a mystery, the tale of the horse is not. Standing proudly in a Greene County field some 18 miles south of Athens on Georgia Highway 15, the legend of the horse is visualized.
The two ton iron sculpture made headlines from the day it reared its head in front of Reed Hall on the University of Georgia campus over 50 years ago. The famed piece has been fought over, ridden and ridiculed, has had mentions in Time magazine, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Atlanta magazine, not to mention the Athens writers who've tackled the subject. A film was even made about the notorious horse in 1982 by William VanDerKloot.
In 1954, University of Georgia artist-in-residence Abbott Pattison sculpted the 12-foot horse out of metal. Welded metal sculpture was a new addition to the art world and was making one of its first appearances in the country on the UGA campus.
On the very evening that the sculpture of the Iron Horse was placed in front of Reed Hall, disgruntled students set to work with their own creative ideas for the piece. The horse was scribbled on with paint, hay was shoved into its mouth while manure was scattered on the ground behind it, and finally a mattress was placed under it and set on fire.
The artist was naturally, upset. Members of the Art Faculty pondered the situation and campus opinions were split between outrage at the students' treatment of the statue and agreement with the students' charge that it should be removed.
Never again to grace the campus, the Iron Horse was taken into hiding. Time magazine quotes Pattison as saying, "It's degrading to have that happen to anyone's idea. I think their action in taking the horse down and hiding it is cowardly."
L.C. Curtis of the university's horticulture department wanted to take the horse and put it on his land where people could drive by and see it. The sculpture would remain the property of the university and could be moved back to campus at any time the university requested. So the iron horse was put out to pasture on the Curtis farm.
And so the horse stands, subject of a wealth of stories brought on by the initial negative reaction to its presence on campus. A legend in its own time, the Iron Horse shares its history in Athens with its home in Greene County.
The people in ancient Athens also were obsessed with their images. Athens was filled with Epicurean and Stoic philosophers who spent their time listening to and discussing the latest ideas.
The Epicureans regarded the world to be the result of random motion and a combination of atomic particles. They saw no divine intervention in this life and no punishment after death.
The Stoics sought salvation by aligning the will with Inherent Reason of the universe. They were to serve their fellow man, not from love but from pure recognition that the life of service is the life for man.
These philosophers invited the Christian evangelist and missionary named Paul to share his strange ideas in a meeting of the Areopagus. The Areopagus was named after Ares, the Greek god of war and was the central meeting place for the philosophers. While Paul was waiting for the Areopagus Council of philosophers to arrive, he took a stroll among the religious objects.
Acts 17:22-23, in the Bible, tells what Paul found. That passage says, "Paul stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: 'Men of Athens! I see in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: "TO AN UNKNOWN GOD." Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you."
Paul starts off by complimenting the philosophers on their being very religious. He refers to the long string of idols and various objects of worship. There were so many gods and goddesses in the pagan setup that they also had an altar to an unknown god, just in case they had missed one. They were trying to cover all bases.
Paul, who was an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ, then said, "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples [objects] made with hands." Rather than our meeting His needs, He reaches out to us. He is the One who gives us life and breath. Paul continued, "In Him we live and move and have our being" (verse 28). He reminded his listeners that, as some of their poets had said, "We are his offspring."
As the offspring of God, the worship of images could not be right. God is not confined to silver or gold or things fashioned with our hands. Actually the Athenians were worshiping no-gods and were ignorant of the one true God. They listened and some believed.
Just like the Athenians, people today worship many gods. Some worship Buda, or adhere to Islam or other useless religions. Some, in effect, worship their money, boat or other object that takes their focus off of the true God.
The "unknown God" to whom Paul referred is the One who deserves our worship. As Paul told his audience, God has set a day on which He will judge the world by the Man He has appointed. That man is Jesus Christ. Paul continued by saying God has given proof of this by raising Jesus Christ from the dead. This God is still unknown by many people around the world. Are you one of them?
The revelation of God came to focus in Jesus Christ. He is the God who gives you the air you breathe. He made you well when you were sick. He can give you comfort when you are grief-stricken. The only true God is the one who can put meaning into your life. He is the God of love. He is capable of meeting your every need. He deserves your full devotion.
The "unknown God" revealed to the Athenians by Paul is the God of salvation. Paul tells his listeners they should seek God who "commands all men everywhere to repent. For He has fixed a day when He will judge the world with justice by the Man [Jesus Christ] He has appointed" (v. 30).
There are many people today who do not consider their sins to be serious. They are sort of like Joel Bryan. A state trooper walked into the room and approached a young man sitting on a bench. "Joel Bryan?" the trooper asked. Looking up, Joel acknowledged his identity. The trooper said, "Stand up, I'm placing you under arrest." In one quick motion Joel was pulled up and handcuffed. Stunned as to what had happened, Joel was hauled off to jail.
Joel worked for a fire inspection company and was contracted to inspect the fire systems in a prison. A routine check was done on him to see if there were any "wants or warrants" for him. Unfortunately, Joel had some outstanding tickets and since he skipped a court appearance a statewide bench warrant was issued against him.
Joel knew he had some outstanding tickets and knew he had missed his court appearance. When he was filling out the clearance form to enter the prison, he was told that if he had any outstanding warrants, the police would come over and arrest him. He figured, however, that his traffic violations were not real crimes so they would not cause any problems. His rationale went something like this: "Compared to the other offenders, my offences are quite mild. Since my infractions are so insignificant they will probably fall through the cracks. Even if they don't, the consequences should not be severe."
Obviously he misjudged the situation. Unfortunately, many people make the same type of miscalculation when it comes to their eternal destiny. Are you one of them? God will not gloss over your sins. Don't find out too late.
Romans 3:23 (in the Bible, God's word) says, "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 6:23 says, "The wages of sin is death [eternal death in hell], but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." How can you receive that life? Read on.
John 3:16-18 (in the Bible) says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son."
If you have not trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord of your life, you are already condemned to spend eternity in hell when you die. However, you can pass from that state of condemnation and receive eternal life with the privilege of going to heaven when you die and spend eternity with God. In addition, you will have God's Holy Spirit living within you to help you understand the Scriptures (Bible), know right from wrong, and give you wisdom and strength to weather difficult situations in life.
Heaven is a holy place and sin cannot enter it. But every person has sinned and so is disqualified for entering heaven. God loves you so much he wants your fellowship and wants you to live in His heaven. At a great sacrifice to Him, He sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to our rescue. Jesus voluntarily left the glories of heaven and came to live among the people. An angel told a virgin that she would give birth to the Savior, conceived by the Holy Spirit. This fulfilled many prophesies God had given His prophets centuries earlier. Angels also announced Jesus birth and affirmed that He is the Savior. Many other affirmations were made.
As a man Jesus healed the sick, caused the blind to see, the deaf to hear, the lame to walk and raised the dead to life. He calmed the storm on the sea, fed thousands with only a few loaves of bread and a few fish. All of this fulfilled prophecies about Him.
Jesus is the only one who ever lived a sinless life and He therefore could atone for our sins. He was crucified on a cross for our sins. This fulfilled the prophecies about Him. God raised Him from the dead and He spent another forty days on earth, appearing to over 500 people at one time. Then he ascended into heaven. He will come again as this world begins to come to a close and the final judgment will occur.
How can your record of sin be purged? In going to the cross Jesus took on Himself the sins of all who will trust Him -- that is, who will let Him control their lives. This also means that He is to be your only Lord. Other so-called god's are to be rejected. There is only one true God, the Lord God Almighty who created the universe and all that is within it. Jesus Christ, God the Father and the Holy Spirit are all one God. This triune God is expressed in three ways for our benefit. When you trust Jesus as your Savior, He takes your sin on Himself (he paid your penalty) and He clothes you in His righteousness. He forgives every sin you have committed and every sin you will ever commit. You are secure in His hands. You are saved, not by your good works, but to do good works that honor Him.
Once you are saved, contact a pastor or missionary of a church that baptizes by immersion in water and ask to be baptized. Jesus instructs us to do so. It is a picture of Jesus burial and resurrection and provides a public testimony of your decision.
To help with your decision, you may wish to pray a prayer such as this:
Dear God, I know that I am a sinner. I am sorry for my sins and am now turning from them to you. Please forgive me. I now am making Jesus Christ the Lord of my life. I want to please you. Take charge of my life and show me the way to live. Thank you my Lord for saving me. I pray in the precious name of Jesus Christ, my Savior!
If you need help in your decision or the follow-up, just send me a note from the email page of this site. Let me know of your decision. It will be encouragement to me.
May God bless you and may you bless God.

The following drama was originally reported by Peter Michelmore in the October 1987 READER'S DIGEST: Normally the flight from Nassau to Miami took Walter Wyatt, Jr., only sixty- five minutes. But on December 5, 1986, he attempted it after thieves had looted the navigational equipment in his Beechcraft. With only a compass and a hand-held radio, Walter flew into skies blackened by storm clouds. When his compass began to gyrate, Walter concluded he was headed in the wrong direction. He flew his plane below the clouds, hoping to spot something, but soon he knew he was lost.
Walter put out a mayday call, which brought a Coast Guard Falcon search plane to lead him to an emergency landing strip only six miles away. Suddenly Wyatt's right engine coughed its last and died. The fuel tank had run dry. Around 8 p.m. Wyatt could do little more than glide the plane into the water. Wyatt survived the crash, but his plane disappeared quickly, leaving him bobbing on the water in a leaky life vest.
With blood on his forehead, Wyatt floated on his back. Suddenly he felt a hard bump against his body. A shark had found him. Wyatt kicked the intruder and wondered if he would survive the night. He managed to stay afloat for the next ten hours. In the morning, Wyatt saw no airplanes, but in the water a dorsal fin was headed for him. Twisting, he felt the hide of a shark brush against him. In a moment, two more bull sharks sliced through the water toward him. Again he kicked the sharks, and they veered away, but he was nearing exhaustion. Then he heard the sound of a distant aircraft.
When the aircraft was within a half mile, Walter waved his orange vest. The pilot radioed the Cape York, which was twelve minutes away: "Get moving, cutter! There's a shark targeting this guy!" As the Cape York pulled alongside Wyatt, a Jacob's ladder was dropped over the side. Wyatt climbed wearily out of the water and onto the ship, where he fell to his knees and kissed the deck. He'd been saved. He didn't need encouragement or better techniques. Nothing less than outside intervention could have rescued him from sure death. How much we are like Walter Wyatt.
Life is much like Walter's experience. At birth you began life's journey. As you grew, you sought to find your way. As tine passed, storm clouds rolled in and your compass readings seemed unsure. Life got out of control, although you may have thought you were in control. You ran out of gas and you were lost. Before you knew it you are floundering in the sea, helplessly at the "mercy" of the shark. The shark is Satan, also called the devil. His delight is in keeping you lost, preventing your rescue and destroying you.
The rescuer has arrived! He is standing by and has let the ladder down for you. He is the One who can give you a new life, one with meaning and purpose in the here and now. The life He offers lasts forever. It is a birth that transcends physical death and carries you over to an eternal home in heaven.
The Bible shows us the way. I Peter 1:3-5 says, "Praise be to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade -- kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time."
At the beginning of life you were safely held in the arms of God. The Bible teaches that children go to heaven when they die. But when one reaches the age at which he/she is able to know right from wrong and realize that the sins committed are sins against God, that person becomes responsible for his or her own actions. unless the person chooses to let Jesus Christ have control of his or her life, that person becomes lost.
For Some, this awareness and ability to decide come by the age of 7 or 8. For others, perhaps around age 12 or 13. Generally, this is so by the time a person reaches the teen years, unless there is a mental deformity that slows or prevents this awareness. God understands this and keeps that person safe when unable to make this type of distinction. When a lost person dies, that person goes to a fiery hell that lasts forever.
God loves you and does not want you to go to hell. But heaven is a holy place and because of your sins, you cannot enter. But you may say, "I live a good moral life and do good deeds for others." That does not compensate for your sins. Every person has sinned. Even unbelief in God's Son, Jesus Christ, is sin. In fact, it is the greatest sin of all. We cannot be good enough to be saved. Romans 3:23 in the Bible says, "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Is there any hope? It sounds so hopeless!
There is one way, and one way only for you to be saved. This way will (1) allow you to escape the horrors of an eternal hell, (2) provide you an eternal home in heaven with God, a place where there is peace, no sorrow, no tears, no sickness and no night, (3) assure the presence and guidance of God through His Holy Spirit who will come to live within you. This way is Jesus Christ who said in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
God's love for you is so great that, knowing you would sin and disqualify yourself from heaven, He sent His own Son to offer Himself as a sacrifice for your sins. Jesus had no sin of His own and qualified as a sacrifice for your. He took your sins on Himself and offers you His righteousness. You cannot earn salvation; it is a gift, but you must accept it. Ephesians 2:8-9, speaking to believing Christians says, "It is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast." God raised Jesus from the dead after He had been in the grave for three days. Jesus remained on the earth for 40 more days and appeared to over 500 people at once before ascending into heaven as the people watched. One day, before bringing the world to an end, He will return to earth.
You receive the new life by allowing Jesus Christ to take control of your life. No longer are you living for yourself, but you are living to allow God to work His plan for your life.
If you are ready for God to rescue you from the shark and give you this new life, you simply need to sincerely, in an act of commitment, turn from your sins and ask God to take charge of your life. A prayer such as the following, or in your own words, can help facilitate this decision.
Dear God, I am a wretched sinner and do not deserve your love. But I thank you that you love me anyway. I am sorry for my sins and turn from them to you. I now trust your Son Jesus Christ and invite Him to be Lord of my life. Please save me, indwell me with Your Holy Spirit and take charge of my life. My life will be lived to your honor and glory from now on.
Thank you, Father, for saving me and giving me eternal life. In the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, my Savior, Amen
If you trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior or re-committed yourself to Him, to live a life more pleasing to Him, please let me know. Just go to the email page and drop me a note.
Do you need help on what to do next, when you have trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior? I'll be glad to help you. In the meantime, find a church that teaches salvation through faith in Jesus Christ and baptizes by immersion in water, like Jesus was baptized. Baptist churches believe and practice this, but there are also other evangelical churches that do also. I hope this will help guide you in your country and the specific area in which you live.
Take care,

Mrs Monica Buck and her family migrated to Australia in 1949 in response to advertisements seeking skilled tradespeople.
As a passionate tea drinker her main concern was that Australians also drank tea. After her husband reassured her that she could drink tea in Australia, Mrs Buck and her family moved to Australia and settled in Victoria.
On her 97th birthday last year Mrs Buck decided it was never too late to become an Australian citizen. On Australia Day 2008, 59 years after migrating, Mrs Buck swore allegiance to her adopted country and Australia was finally able to officially welcome her as a member of the Australian family.
"This shows that age is no barrier to dreams," Mrs Buck said.
"I realised that Australia and the people have been very good to me. I thought I have to give something back so I decided to give myself." - "Personal Stories of Australian Citizenship"
If an alien who has taken up residence in your country wishes to become a citizen of your country, there usually are certain steps required. Also, certain steps are required for one to become a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven.
In Matthew 5:3-10 (in the Bible) Jesus Christ, God's Son, was teaching His disciples. He presented them with some truths that we call the Beatitudes. These indicate how citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven (those who have receved eternal life through Jesus Christ) should live. The first four of these beatitudes also reflect the steps for citizenship in the Kingdom. Other scriptures give the specific instructions for receiving eternal life. Following the beatitudes, Jesus relates the responsibilities of citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Steps for Entering the Kingdom of Heaven
You must recognize your spiritual poverty. In verse 3 Jesus said, "Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven."In other words, happy is one who recognizes his/her spiritual poverty. Never can one find salvation without first coming to this realization. This step leads to the others. The Bible says that every person is impoverished spiritually. Romans 3:23 says "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." People are separated from God because of rebellion against God. This spiritual impoverishment must be recognized and accepted before anyone is ready to accept salvation.
You must recognize that your spiritual poverty is serious and be sorry for it. In verse 4, the second beatitude, Jesus said, "Blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted." There are at least two kinds of sorrow. One type of sorrow is the type a criminal feels upon getting caught. He is sorry he got caught. This type of sorrow does not lead to a change in his behavior. It has no connection with repentance.
The type of sorrow I am speaking of is a godly sorrow. This type of sorrow causes a person to hate sin. It leads
one to make adjustments in his/her life. It leads to repentance. Repentance implies a change of direction, a turning around to go the opposite direction. The person turns from sin and to God. Godly sorrow is the emotional element of repentance. There is no repentance without some emotion.
Years ago, a Christian professor named Stuart Blackie of the University of Edinburgh was listening to his students as they presented oral readings. When one young man rose to begin his recitation, he held the book in the wrong hand. The professor thundered, "Take your book in your right hand and be seated!" At this harsh rebuke, the student held up his right arm. He didn't have a right hand!. The other students shifted uneasily in their seats.
For a moment the professor hesitated. Then he made his way to the student, put his arm around him, and with tears streaming from his eyes, said "I never knew about it. Please, will you forgive me?" His humble apology made a lasting impact on the young man. The story was told some time later in a large gathering of believers. At the close of the meeting a man came forward, turned to the crowd, and raised his right arm. It ended at the wrist. He said, "I was that student. Professor Blackie led me to Christ. But he never could have done it if he hade not made the wrong right." (Source unknown)
In coming to Christ, it is a matter of making the wrong right. It is a genuine sorrow at how you have treated the Lord that leads to repentance, a turning from self to Jesus Christ.
The faith step of salvation is reflected in verse 5, the third beatitude. It says, "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth." Meek does not mean weak. Basically, the word means "surrendered to a master." I Greek literature before the time of Christ on earth the same word was used to describe a mighty wild stallion that had been broken to obedience to his master. The surrender to Jesus Christ as Master of your life is the faith step of salvation.
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled," (verse 6, the 4th beatitude) reflects the results of the previous three steps. Jesus fills the emptiness caused by sin. When you trust Christ as your Lord and Savior, you will have an emptiness, a hunger and thirst after God's righteousness, and God will fill that emptiness. This is a picture of the result of the birth into the kingdom.
This verse is a transition into the next group of beatitudes.
How Citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven Should Conduct Themselves
These four beatitudes relate to three aspects of the Christian life: (1) attitude of life, (2) motive in life and (3) Christlike activity.
"Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy (fifth beatitude, verse 7)." What attracts us most about God? The quality and quantity of His mercy! It is difficult for us to understand the great love and mercy of God that would cause Him to search out sinful humanity and bring us to Himself at such a cost!
As a child of God this should be your attitude of life. You, then, must be a person of mercy. The fruits of mercy are forgiveness and identification with the needs of others.
If we find ourselves unconcerned about the everyday problems of those with whom we work and play and study, we should pray for more love and mercy on our part. We must love even the unlovely and unloving. After all, Christ loved you enough to die for you.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God ( the sixth beatitude, verse 8). This has to do with the Christian motive in life. being pure in heart means that one is free from secondary motivation. Matthew 6:33 is the key. There we are told to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.
Out of this purity of heart comes character. This type of direction in life will lead a Christian to live a consistent life. The Christian will be just as careful and aware of his/her conduct when away from home among strangers as when at home. Such a Christian will strive to be just as Christlike when on vacation as the rest of the year. The Christian with a pure heart will wear the Christian armor to work or school or at home every day and not leave it in the place of worship on Sunday, only to be donned again when he/she returns to the place of community worship.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons of God" (seventh beatitude, verse 9). This is Christian activity.
A peacemaker is one who soothes disturbed feelings. One of the names by which Jesus was to be called was "Prince of Peace." When Jesus was born, the words of the angels were, "Peace on earth." Jesus once told his disciples, "I have told you these things that in me you might have peace" (John 16:33).
Jesus' riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, just days before his crucifixion, was a symbol of the fact that he was a bringer of peace. He comes to bring peace to the heart of each person who will
receive Him as Lord and Savior. Romans 5:1 says, "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
The basic activity of a child of God is to carry on His activity. Be peacemakers. Help people find peace, not only with one another but with God.
"Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you" (eighth beatitude, verses 10-12). These three verses are actually one beatiitude.
We must be willing to pay the cost. When you accept Christ and His way of life, self is no longer most important. We must be able to practice in our own lives what the apostle Paul (a brave missionary in the Bible) found necessary for himself. He said, "I die every day" (1 Corinthians 15:31). This death to self takes our attention off of the cares of self and helps us to see the cares and needs of others.
Things will be rough sometimes. Persecution may come to us in different ways. In some countries Christians are killed, but they have eternal life with God in heaven after the grave. In other places in the world, Christians are ridiculed. Christians from the first centry on, have bravely faced the threat of death and other persecution to publish the Good News of Christ and spread His word around the world. It is said of the twelve apostles of Christ, only John died a natural death, and he was exiled to the Isle of Patmos. The others met violent death because of their Christian witness.
Our persecution may be subtle. Perhaps it will take the form of not being accepted in a group, or listening to remarks of your being a "church goer," with the implication that this makes you a "softy."
When you receive Christ as Lord and Savior, His Holy Spirit comes to live within you. He will give you courage. 1 John 4:4 says, "You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world." And again, 1 John 5:4 says, "For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith."
Responsibilities of Citizens of the Kingdom
Matthew 5:13-16 follow the beatitudes. There Jesus said, "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives its light to everyone in the house. In the same way let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your
Father in heaven."
Jesse Allen, who at one time was president of the Southern Baptist Radio & Television Commission, once told a group of us about an incident that occurred when he was pastor of First baptist Church in San Antonio, Texas. One Sunday a group of YIPPIES picketed the church, protesting both the institution of the church and the Vietnam War. He invited them back to do the same thing inside. They had a hard time believing it but the next Sunday they were back. They heard about some of the reach-out programs of the church, and they heard about a Savior who loves them and has a plan for each life. They saw young people making decisions for Christ. Three of the five YIPPIES present that morning made decisions for Christ. Instead of trying to turn demonstrators away or calling the cops, the church sent a positive message to a surprised group of activists.
Many do not understand the church's attitude of wanting to be involved, but we often are guilty of doing nothing about problems around us. It is easy not to get involved.
We must meet humanity where humanity lives. We must speak a language they can understand, rather than using theological words they do not comprehend. We must not think of church as four walls. We must relate to the needs of people every day. Show that we care. Then, as we tell them of the love of Christ, they will know it's true because they have seen it through us.
If you are considering Christ as your Savior, it is not just a matter of identifying with Christians or a church. It is a whole new life. To receive Christ, you must turn from sin and self and fully accept Christ and the life He has for you. It is not simply reformation but a transformation. It is not something you do. It is letting Christ do with you whatever He pleases.
The Bible says every person has sinned. God is holy and no sin is in heaven. Because of our sin, we are disqualified from entering heaven when we die. But God loves us and wants us to spend eternity with Him, so He sent His Son (Jesus) as a baby born of a virgin impregnated by God's Holy Spirit. Jesus grew from a baby into manhood and is the only one who ever lived that did not commit a sin. He qualified to offer himself as a sacrifice for us, to atone for our sins. All who will receive Jesus Christ as Savior, letting God have control of their lives, are "saved." That is they receive eternal life. After this body that houses us on earth dies, we continue to live in heaven. God will give us new perfect bodies. In addition when we believe, the Holy Spirit comes to live within us. He will help us determine right from wrong and help us understand the Scriptures. He will give us courage when things go wrong. You will be able to talk to God (pray) and He will listen.
How do you ask Jesus to come into your life? God knows your mind and hears your prayers. Just talk to Him as you normally do when you converse with other people. He will hear and answer your prayers.
Your prayer to receive Jesus could be something like this: "Dear God of heaven, the Creator of the universe and all that is within it, I know that I have sinned against you. I have gone my own way. I am sorry for my sins and I now turn from them and to you. I invite Jesus Christ your Son into my life as Savior and Lord. Please forgive me and save me and take charge of my life. Thank you for forgiving me and extending your mercy and grace to me. Give me strength and courage to be faithful to you. In the name of Jesus Christ your Son, my Savior, I pray. Amen."
There will be times when you will slip up and fail to do what is right. Don't be discouraged, just ask God's forgiveness and depend on Him to help you do better.
