     If you get a new computer with Microsoft Windows installed, the default opening website that Internet Explorer will open when activated will be the Microsoft site, likely www.msn.com or the computer company's site. When you establish Internet connection with an Internet service provider (ISP), the ISP's software may change your default opening page to its website. You may prefer your Internet browser to open at different site. You can set it to open at any web page you wish. Here's how:
       1. Start Internet Explorer. In Windows XP you can do this by clicking on START, then on "Internet."
       2. When Internet Explorer opens, type in the address (URL) of the website you wish to open and click "Go."
       3. When the website opens, go up to the menu bar and click on Tools. On the drop-down menu, select "Internet Options."
       4. In the Internet Options dialog window that appears, select the General tab. There under the Home Page heading you will see the address of the web page you just opened. Click the "Use Current" button.
       5. Click OK. If you make changes under other tabs, click the Apply button after each one and then OK.
     Now when you use Internet Explorer, it will open at the site you have chosen. Other browsers have similar methods of accomplishing the same thing.

Editing Read Only Files

     A friend of mine offered to edit a manuscript for another friend, a Pearl Harbor survivor, who wrote a book about his life and Pearl Harbor experiences. The story was on a CD. The friend spent four days making corrections and then discovered that none of the corrections appeared in the edited manuscript. He tried copying the document but an error message informed him that he did not have authority to do so. The friend called me.
     Often in such a situation, the file can be copied and saved with a different file name or in a different folder, but this didn't work for him. The "Paste" icon on the toolbar, mouse right-click list and that option on the file menu were grayed out, so not available.
     This being the case, I instructed the friend to remove the Read-only restriction. This was done by right-clicking on the file name and choosing "Properties." At the bottom of the Properties window, General tab, is a section called "Attributes." There are three checkboxes named "Read-only," "Hidden" and "Archive." The checkmark in the Read-only box was removed. The paste option was still disabled.
     Sometimes when copy and paste options have been disabled on the toolbar, mouse right-click and file menu, the keyboard shortcuts have been overlooked. I asked my friend to go to the Edit menu and choose "Select All." This highlighted the entire document. Then I asked him to hold down the Ctrl key while he pressed the letter C key. This copied all of the text to the Windows clipboard, although the user doesn't see any thing happen.
     My friend then opened a new blank page in Microsoft Word. I asked him to click on the page to be sure his cursor was on it, then hold down the Ctrl key while he pressed the letter V key. Success! The document appeared on the new page. He then made some edits to the document and saved it under a new name by adding a 2 at the end of the filename. He closed the document and re-opened it. The changes were there.
     Don't forget the keyboard shortcuts. I have many of them listed in the Archives of Computer Stuff on this website. They are real time-savers.

Lost or Moved Taskbar

     The taskbar is the strip at the bottom (normally) of your desktop, display screen. It contains the Notifications area (formerly called the system tray) at the right end. That area contains your clock and a few other start-up programs. The middle section of the taskbar tells you which programs you have open. On the left end by the Start button is the Quick Launch Bar, if you have it activated.
     Sometimes the taskbar gets moved or disappears. It is easy to accidentally move it with the mouse, even push it back where its edge can hardly be seen. Perhaps it keeps disappearing when you have program windows open or when the mouse pointer moves away from it. If this has happened to you, here is how to get it back.
   1. You cannot find the taskbar. The taskbar may elude you even when you run the mouse pointer near the edges of the display, it may have inadvertently been pushed so far into the edge of your screen that you can hardly see the edge of it. Minimize the programs you have open. Now, work your mouse around the outer edges of your display, normally at the bottom, until you get a double arrow. You have found your taskbar. With the double arrow showing, hold down the left button of the mouse and drag the taskbar out from the edge to its normal width.
   2. The taskbar has moved to a new location. Normally the taskbar is located at the bottom of the screen. However, it can be moved to either side or the top. Some people prefer one of those locations. But it gets there more frequently by the user accidentally dragging it away from its default location and it snaps to another edge -- the one that is nearest. To return the taskbar to its previous location, just place the mouse pointer in a blank area of the taskbar, hold down the left button and drag it back toward the original location. It will quickly pop to that spot.
     If you just wish to change it to another location, right click on the START button and choose "Properties." Under the Taskbar tab of the Properties box, be sure that "Lock the taskbar" is not checked. Then follow the instructions above. After moving the taskbar to the location you prefer, you may wish to place a checkmark in the "Lock the taskbar" checkbox so it will not be accidentally moved.
   3. The taskbar disappears when programs are open or when the mouse pointer moves away from it. To correct the problem, do this:
     Right-click on the START button and select "Properties." In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window, click on the Taskbar tab. If auto-hide is checked, uncheck it. Place a checkmark in the checkboxes for "Keep taskbar on top of other windows" and "Lock the taskbar. This will keep program windows from covering the taskbar and will lock it in place to prevent you from accidentally moving it. I would suggest also placing checkmarks in the boxes for "Group taskbar buttons" and "Show Quick Launch." The Quick Launch bar allows you to move shortcuts of frequently used programs to it and launch them with one click.

Change the Mouse Pointers Scheme

     Do you get tired of the plain default mouse pointers in Windows? Would you like to change them? You can. Of course I'm an old foggy and am perfectly satisfied with the generic ones. But you may not be.
     In the Mouse Properties window (START > Control Panel > Mouse (double-click), select the Pointers tab and press the little down arrow at the end of the Scheme section. Select a pointer set in the list. Click OK. If no additional schemes are listed in the drop-down list, you can download additional sets of mouse pointers from the Internet.
     Some sources for free mouse pointer sets are:
    PCWorld. See middle of page. There are five pages of free cursors.
    Debi's Cursors
    Joe's Cursors
    GoldFiles, a part of the Digital Download Network.
    Customize.org
    A purchase source is CursorXP. There are many other free and purchase sources for cursors and cursor sets.
     Follow the instructions for download and installation given at each site. Some may be included in zip files. Place these in a folder (not the Cursors folder), unzip them and move the expanded files to the Cursors folder. Some sets may be in executable files that will install the fonts. Still other sites may provide for automatic installation using the Run option on the Download box. The cursors placed in the Cursors folder must be in the .cur or .ani formats. The .cur cursors are static ones and the .ani ones are animated. Now you should have several from which to select.
     In Windows XP, the folder for Cursor sets and files is located at C:\Windows\Cursors. If additional compatible cursor sets are now in the Cursors folder, you will have more options in the Scheme section mentioned above.
     You can change individual pointers without changing a whole set.
     Do you sometimes lose track of your mouse pointer? There are several ways to make it more visible and to keep track of it. I'll mention a few here. A couple of these may be especially helpful if you are using a notebook computer.
     The location to make mouse pointer changes in Windows XP is the Mouse Properties Window. It is accessed by clicking on START, then choosing "Control Panel." In the Control Panel double-click on the Mouse icon. The Mouse Properties window will open.
Replace Individually Selected Pointers.      In the Customize section of the Mouse Properties box (Pointers tab), highlight the image you wish to change. The highlighted cursor will appear in the little box in the upper right-hand corner. If the cursor is an animated one, this icon will also show the animation.
     Click the browse button and select the cursor you want to replace the current one. A picture of the cursor will be in the small image window. Do this with all the cursor images you wish to replace. Click OK.
Soft Hypermarket offers a $10 program, called CursorXP, to customize your mouse pointer in many ways.
     Change the Size of the Cursor. In some, but not all, versions of Windows you can easily adjust the size of the mouse cursor. In the Control Panel double-click on the Mouse icon. The Mouse Properties window will open. Click on the little down arrow at the end of the Scheme space. In the drop down list you can select Windows Standard (large) system scheme or Windows Standard (extra large) system scheme to increase the size of the standard mouse pointers. In addition, some of the other pointer selections may be larger than the Windows default pointers.
Make Mouse Pointers more visible (especially helpful for notebook users). Here I will indicate a few ways to improve the visibility of the mouse pointers.
     Enable Pointer Shadow. In the Mouse Properties window (START > Control Panel > Mouse [double-click]), on the Pointers tab, put a check mark in the Enable pointer shadow checkbox. Click Apply if you are going to make other changes. Otherwise, click OK. This should make the pointers a little more visible, but not much.
     Display Pointer Trails. This one can be irritating on a desktop display but a great help on a notebook where the mouse seems to disappear sometimes, especially on a quick move. In the Mouse Properties window (See item above for path) click on the Pointer Options tab. Place a checkmark in the Display pointer trails checkbox. Click Apply if you intend to make changes on another tab page. Otherwise click OK. Now when you move the mouse pointer, a temporary trail will follow, helping you to keep track of its movement.      Show the pointer's location when you press the Ctrl key. In the Mouse Properties window (See above items for path) click on the Pointer Options tab. Place a checkmark in the "Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key" checkbox. Click on Apply if you intend to make changes on other tab pages. Otherwise click OK.
     This tip is not only great for notebooks, but may be helpful on your desktop computer. I have activated it on mine. I also have a checkmark in the "Hide pointer while typing" checkbox. Now, while I am typing, the pointer will not get in the way. If I lose track of it, I can just press and release the Ctrl key and circles emanate out from the pointer.
     You may wish to check out other options relating to your mouse while you are in the Mouse Properties window.

        In my previous posting I provided an extensive list (40-60 paqes unless font size was reduced) of acronyms for text messaging and e-mail. It was for use as a reference, especially for parents trying to understand messages sent and received by their children. Also, it provided a means for looking up acronyms they receive but do not understand. The list of acronyms provided this time consists of more frequently used ones. In most cases this will reduce the look up time and provide a list short enough to be learned.

        An e-mail recipient cannot see the facial expressions or tone of voice in which a message is sent. That is where emoticons (emotional icons) can be helpful. You may be joking but the printed text may sound serious. An emoticon can clarify your intent. You can type an emoticon or you can insert one that is a ready-made icon image, better known as smilies. Emoticons can also be used to describe the appearance of someone or something.
        Let's look at some emoticons you can type from the keyboard. There are no standard definitions for these. Most of them resemble a face, that is rotated sideways to the left.
        You may wish to print the chart for reference, and perhaps send it to someone with whom you text message. Or you can tell them where they can find it.
        Where there are multiple emoticons for one expression, I generally listed them as a group but re-listed them beginning with one of the other emoticons of the group. This is to simplify location of individual ones.
